Out Into The Snow

|

Well, the snowfall ended about dinnertime last night, though the wind continued to blow. What was the final snowfall? Hard to say, as I didn’t measure last night. But when I went this morning to start shoveling things off, we had over 12 inches on the ground. That’s about the same as the snowstorm in December.

The boys still had some fun stomping through the deeper snow this morning, though it was a bit intimidating at times for Sean and Daniel. It was deep enough to definitely drop some snow down into my boots when I had to wander out into it. The boys and Kellie helped with some of the snow shoveling, though help may be a bit strong of a word for what the twins did. A video in the picture album below shows you how they helped there.

(I’m trying out a new photo album style. This one allows YouTube videos to be played within the slide show. Let me know what you think.)

The sun continues to shine today, even if the temperature is barely above freezing. The driveway, cars, and sidewalk are nicely cleared and melted, but the neighborhood roads still await a plowing. School for tomorrow has already been canceled. This is actually the first canceled school day of the year, as the last snowfall arrived after winter break started. I’m guessing Kellie and I won’t get canceled work days, however.

Let's Go Swimming...

IMG_4355.JPGSwimming at the pool.

Or something like that. (Wiggles are sticking in my brain.)

Last Sunday, we took the boys to the pool for a bit of swimming. We remembered to take the camera with us, so we got some shots of the boys jumping in the deep end (of course, Daddy is catching, as it’s too deep for Mommy) and Will swimming back to the edge.

A couple of interesting side notes on this. For 2 or 3 pool visits before this past Sunday, Sean would not get in the pool beyond the first step in the shallow end. He just didn’t want to get wet, for whatever reason. And now, suddenly, he’s jumping in like a pro. You can see a little hesitation at times, but he has too much fun jumping in and kicking around.

Daniel, on the other hand, loves to jump in. He even was doing it earlier in the afternoon. So it was strange to get him on camera doing essentially a belly flop. And shortly after that shot, he was jumping in normally. But I guess it adds a bit of humor to the jumping. All 3 boys took turns nicely jumping in.

I don’t know why things got a bit blurrier on the second shot, but it isn’t permanently on the camera. Oh well.

Gimme Some Old-Time Rock And Roll

|

Hard to believe we’re one-third of the way through the year already. Where has time gone?

While you ponder that, enjoy a little rocking-out on the bayou between Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Domino. That’s some nice piano playing there.

New Holiday Carols For You

|

This made the news back in December, but I missed it. (Not surprising, given the hectic nature of the month and the broken hand slowing me down.) I was listening to a Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me podcast last week, and they had a bit about this — remaking familiar Christmas carols into odes to clean coal technology.

Yes, it is real.

The video for Frosty the Coalman has been saved for posterity. After all, who doesn’t want to sing the following?

Frosty the Coalman, is a jolly happy soul,
He’s abundant here in America and he helps our economy roll.
Frosty the Coalman’s getting cleaner every day
He’s affordable and adorable and helps workers keep their pay.

Starting To Play Catch-Up

|

I finally got the video uploaded this morning, so here we go…

OK, these aren’t what I had originally intended to pull together, but I discovered some video that Kellie had taken last Wednesday when scanning through Picasa. And while I was previewing the video, I discovered that Picasa version 3 now has the ability to mash together video clips with simple transitions and other features and then automatically upload the resulting composite video directly to YouTube. So what you see below is an attempt to make this happen.

I will say this — the upload feature in Picasa is extremely slow. I could have uploaded it much faster directly through the YouTube site.

The pictures are just a couple of shots of some cool cats, trying out their new sunglasses. They’re definitely too cool for me.

There's Something Brewing on the Bayou

Sorry if you get tired of the Rice football entries, but it’s an easy way to post my thoughts.

For the second straight weekend, the Rice Owls football team was on TV. And they were not looking as good as last week. They were down 28-13 at the start of the 4th quarter (and outgained on offense 2 to 1), and even under 7 minutes, they were still down by 35-20. But then they scored a touchdown, made a defensive stop, then went 93 yards for another touchdown. Then the tying 2-point conversion.

But there was over a minute left, and Memphis got the ball back and was driving for at least a field goal when this happened:

So yes, Rice is now 2-0, heading to a showdown at Vanderbilt (also 2-0) this weekend. One of these “traditional” doormats is going to be 3-0 after this weekend. Hard to believe, to be honest. The highlight reel of touchdowns (and a couple other key plays) can be found on this highlight reel from CBS College Sports.

Actually, the interception made ESPN’s Game Changing Performance vote. Vote before Thursday for the Week 2 entries (Rice is the third video). Here’s the summary videos, for longevity sake.

Camp Fairfax Redux

|

This is a follow on from last week. Will stayed in Northern Virginia with Nana and Grampa from Sunday through Friday morning, to enjoy some time with my parents and do some different things with them. He had a blast — he was originally supposed to stay until Wednesday, but insisted on staying longer. I guess that shows where Mommy and Daddy rate. (Luckily, Nana and Grampa could accommodate him a bit longer.)

We pulled together a few of the pictures from Will’s visit, starting with some sightseeing in downtown DC on Sunday (after helping drop Auntie Emily at the bus). He did swimming every day, but also found time for some craft projects, going to the park, doing nature hikes, making puzzles, reading, and lots of other fun. He definitely is looking forward to going back next year.

He also got to see his new cousin Nicholas Basil Argerson for the first time. (He wasn’t allowed to visit at the hospital.) Those are pictures of him with Nicholas in the middle of the slide show. At the end is Will returning home and having lunch out with Daddy, Nana and Grampa. He was very tired at the end of it, but he really enjoyed his time. A special thanks to the camp director for giving him many special memories.

Will's Casting Call

JibJab has come out with its first video covering the 2008 national election cycle. Hopefully, you remember them from their first video about the Bush/Kerry race. Funny stuff.

Well, cute thing that it is, you can now insert yourself or others into specific parts of their videos. So, Will gets his first crack at stardom. Check it out.

OK, you had to wait until the end, but it still was fun. You can pretty much put in whatever you want — even the cat. (We may try that one soon.) It may be just a small part, but I’m sure it will lead to bigger things!
